The Global Peace Bank conducted training for professionals from various media outlets. The training, themed “The Role of Media in Peacebuilding,” was held on Monday, July 21, 2025, at Sapphire International Hotel in Addis Ababa. It included 22 professionals from radio, television, social media, journalism, and media associations operating within the country.
In his welcoming address, Mr. Argaw Ayele, Manager of Global Peace Bank, stated that the training aimed to enhance the capacity of media entities to contribute to peacebuilding and creating a better world for society, youth, and future generations. He emphasized, “Just as we don’t use old materials to build a new house, to advance our country in peace, we must prioritize new ideas, knowledge, dialogue, and peaceful discussions to resolve conflicts.” He also announced that such training and consultation platforms will continue, with broader collaboration planned with other media entities, communication institutions, and governmental and non-governmental organizations working on peace-related initiatives. Dr. Andualem Abate, who delivered the opening speech, highlighted his long-standing relationship with the Global Peace Bank since its inception. Drawing on his expertise in art, folklore, and literature, he expressed his delight in working with the organization to support Ethiopia’s pursuit of peace. He affirmed his willingness to continue supporting the bank’s peace initiatives and called for collaboration among other institutions, individuals, media, and peace advocates.
In his closing remarks, Honorable Ambassador Dina Mufti noted that longstanding conflicts can be resolved through sustained effort and work. He urged the Global Peace Bank to strengthen its peacebuilding efforts, which began with a focus on “Neighbor First Approach.” He added, “In a context where peace is disrupted for power and personal gain, and division among people remains a significant challenge, such training and discussions are essential and must be utilized effectively.” He pointed out that conflicts in neighboring countries like Sudan and Somalia, as well as across East Africa, are undermining the cycle of peace. He stressed the need for timely peaceful dialogue and peacebuilding efforts to address tensions before they escalate. He also underscored the media’s critical role in countering divisive narratives and promoting peace, urging media professionals to advocate for peace and educate society on its value.
The training was delivered by volunteer instructors from Hawassa University’s Department of Journalism and Communication, in collaboration with the Global Peace Bank.
