Hawassa, Ethiopia – October 20, 2025
On Monday, October 20, 2025, the Global Peace Bank organized a discussion event for the book "Yemedemer Mengist- Lit. The Government of Synergy " at its office in Hawassa, Ethiopia. Written by His Excellency Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD), the book “YeMedemer Mengist” was published and distributed.
A month ago, Global Peace Bank, had purchased 100 copies of the book and distributed them as gifts to four universities and avid readers. The event brought together The Bank’s members, university instructors, and readers to engage in a thoughtful discussion about the book’s content.
In his opening remarks, Mr. Argaw Ayele, the General Manager of Global Peace Bank, emphasized the organization’s mission: “The primary goal of purchasing and distributing books is to extract valuable ideas that contribute to national development, promote knowledge sharing, facilitate the exchange of information, and advance collective national understanding. This initiative helps harness knowledge to inform policy and sustainable development plans while exploring alternative pathways for progress.” He further noted, “Such practices consolidate scattered knowledge into a unified resource, supporting the democracy, peace, and national consensus we strive to build. The discussions and debates initiated through this book should evolve into a cultural norm, and we must work to expand this practice widely.” Mr. Argaw Ayele also shared recommendations for future books to be discussed, encouraging continued engagement.
The discussion was enriched by Mr. Deyamo Dale, a distinguished expert in political science and international relations, who thoroughly reviewed the book’s content after extensive preparation. He highlighted key themes, presenting critical points for discussion and analyzing them in the context of historical, political, social, and economic perspectives. Mr. Deyamo Dale connected the book’s themes to Ethiopia’s current realities, addressing major national development challenges, political tensions, and reasons for developmental setbacks.
The book also explores Ethiopia’s natural resources, human capital, and technological advancements, offering insights into how citizens across various sectors can adopt solutions to remain competitive in the global economy. Particular emphasis was placed on the importance of political unity and building an engaged society to encourage consensus and achieve a shared vision. These points were presented with reference to Ethiopia’s current national context, sparking meaningful dialogue.
Participants, including readers and The Peace Bank members, expressed admiration for the book’s preparation and the issues it raised. They actively engaged by asking questions, sharing opinions, and suggesting additional topics for inclusion. The discussion was robust, with attendees noting that leaders should regularly address tangible challenges and open such issues for public discourse. They argued that institutionalizing this practice could bridge the trust gap between the government and citizens, enabling fearless participation in national plans and encouraging equitable involvement.
The event was moderated by Associate Professor Dr. Melsew Dejene from Hawassa University. It concluded with announcements about preparations for future discussions, marking a successful close to the program.
